Custom Pulley RFQ: Keep the Drawing Revision Visible

A custom pulley becomes easier to reproduce when the RFQ, quotation and purchase order all reference the same drawing revision. Keep the standard HTD family, tooth count and working width on the order line, then list the nonstandard bore, hub, flange, material, finish or inspection controls as drawing-defined features.

For replacement work, use the old part and photographs as evidence of the installation, but do not let an unverified worn dimension become the production definition. Resolve uncertain interfaces before the drawing is released.

What information is needed for quotation?

Send the belt/profile, teeth, belt width, shaft or bush details, quantity and destination. Include a drawing for nonstandard hub, flange, material, finish or inspection requirements.

Can an old pulley be cross-referenced from a photo?

A photo helps identify construction, but dimensions and the mating belt marking are needed before a replacement can be confirmed.

Are all pulleys of the same nominal pitch interchangeable?

No. Confirm the exact tooth family and mechanical interface. Nominal pitch alone is not enough for a replacement decision.

Use a Drawing When the Machine Interface Is the Custom Part

Keep the standard HTD belt-side identity explicit, then mark the features that depart from a catalogue configuration: bore or locking interface, hub projection, flange arrangement, material, finish and any critical inspection requirement.

A replacement sample is useful context, but a dimensioned drawing is the stable order reference. Use functional datums for shaft and belt-line dimensions and identify the drawing revision on the RFQ so prototype changes do not become undocumented production changes.

Define What Is Standard and What Is Custom

A useful custom HTD pulley drawing preserves the standard belt-side geometry wherever possible and clearly marks the features being changed for the machine. The most common drawing-controlled items are bore, keyway or locking interface, hub projection, flange arrangement, material, finish and inspection requirements. If tooth geometry itself must differ from the catalogue family, identify the mating belt specification explicitly; do not describe it only as “HTD-like.”

For a replacement part, capture both faces of the old pulley and the installed belt line before disassembly. If the old pulley has been repaired or remachined, field measurements should be labeled as measurements until the final drawing is reviewed.

Drawing Information That Speeds Review

Show tooth family, tooth count and working face together with the shaft interface. Dimension hub projection from a clear datum and identify which flange faces establish belt position. Add tolerances only to characteristics that functionally need control; a blanket tight tolerance increases manufacturing effort without clarifying what matters.

Material, coating or heat-treatment requests should be tied to the actual duty or customer standard. If a product-specific inspection report or material document is needed, state that requirement on the RFQ before production.

Commercial Planning for Custom Work

Custom components are normally planned around a 20–45 business-day lead-time range after drawing and manufacturing-route approval, subject to material, process and quantity. Special materials and dedicated processes follow their practical process MOQ. Qualified 1–5 piece samples may be reviewed when suitable; mixed models can be consolidated toward approximately USD 1,500. Final commercial terms are confirmed with the released technical definition.

Prototype Quantity Does Not Remove the Need for a Released Drawing

A one-off engineering sample is most useful when it tests the same critical geometry that will be used in production. Even for a small sample quantity, keep the drawing revision, belt family, tooth count, working face and shaft interface explicit. If a sample is changed by hand during machine trials, return those changes to the drawing before the production order.

This prevents the familiar situation in which an approved prototype cannot be reproduced because the successful modification existed only on the physical part.

Quote the Drawing, Not a Verbal Approximation

When the requested configuration departs from a catalogue row, the quotation should refer to the drawing revision that defines the change. That is especially important when a custom hub or shaft connection is combined with a standard HTD tooth family. The drawing keeps the mating-belt requirement visible while controlling the machine-specific geometry.

If a prototype is approved after trial fitting, document any hand modification before production. Production should reproduce the approved geometry, not the original pre-trial drawing.
