3M, 5M, 8M and 14M Matching

Smaller 3M and 5M families are commonly considered where compact geometry and lighter transmission requirements dominate, while 8M and 14M cover larger industrial drive envelopes. Actual capacity depends on belt construction, width, tooth engagement, pulley size, speed and service conditions. Final belt selection should therefore use the belt manufacturer or approved drive-design data rather than a universal load value.

Record every legible belt marking before removing a worn belt. Count pulley teeth only as a cross-check; do not use tooth count alone to infer pitch. Inspect pulley tooth surfaces and flanges for damage because a new belt fitted to a damaged pulley can suffer rapid edge wear or poor tracking.

Use the Complete Belt Marking to Identify the Pulley Family

The belt is often the fastest way to resolve the HTD pitch family on an existing drive. Record the full marking exactly as printed, including pitch family and width information. Do not shorten the record to “5M” or “8M” if other parts of the marking distinguish construction or size. Once the belt identity is established, compare pulleys inside that family by tooth count, working-width series and shaft interface.

If the belt marking is unreadable, preserve the old belt and take close photographs of its tooth side and width. Combine that evidence with the pulley tooth count and dimensions instead of choosing a family from outside diameter alone.
